Addictions And Script

Addiction

An addiction is a condition, illness or activity that is compulsively and obsessively driven. It can be destructive, painful and damaging, not only to the person who experiences the addiction, but to others who are involved such as family or friends.

The success rate with addicts is relatively low. I believe this is because we are still working on what this crippling illness is all about. It is something that has no mercy in its later progress and can even be seen as insanity in its highest form. It can cause pain and suffering beyond belief and I see it as something that is going to grow as people seek to self sooth in a society that has a deficit of healthy relational quality, spiritual essence and a general joy at simplistic living and connection with others. We don’t necessarily feel like we belong or invite people to see the values in community as life gets busier and individuals seek solace in activities that have huge damage potential. This can range from substance misuse, food, toxic relationships, vanity, gambling, shopping, internet, pornographic material, and more. Any activity which has someone in its grips where it controls them and they have lost a sense of self in the process is an addiction.

Script

This is one’s psychological process that underpins behaviours, thoughts and feeling. The powerful engine that drives us which is relevant to our historical story and the often unconscious decisions we have made in how to survive life as best we can. This starts in childhood and can continue and manifest in behaviours and core beliefs as adults. Some of the processes can be useful but others can be counterproductive and even hinder ones potential in life. Script contains themes, defences, drivers, injunctions, core beliefs, personal narrative and can evoke strong feelings that take over. Often people don’t know about their script or psychological process that can be driving their actions and feelings. With addiction I have found those that I work with that get in touch with and understand the essence of their process, story and script, benefit from this powerful self awareness that can help them manage their lives. Inviting one to observe their own script, unveiling what it contains and realising what it all mean is a very pwerful process. rather than what they see and believe in being right or wrong. We all have a script and this is for good re
