Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a way i can be cured or fixed so that i don’t suffer from addiction anymore?
Unfortunately, addiction is a progressive illness that up to date being fixed or cured is not something that can be done so that the
individual can continue with using substance.
I have stopped using drugs but don’t feel better emotionally?
Often people stop using their drug of choice but may need to do some extra work on self because there can be lots of pain inside someone that needs exploring and supporting while this takes place.
What is addiction driven by?
This is something that cant be answered conclusively but often when exploring peoples life stories lots of emotion can be seen as driving someone to self sooth and when substance is used this can have dangerous consequences.
Is Addiction genetic?
Again this is difficult to answer conclusively but there is research into the fact that certain individuals have the addictive gene.
Where is research on this illness?
This is an ongoing process and researchers study and learn more and more about the complexity of this illness. This is from neuroscience and brain formation and process, genetic research and people , behaviour and psychology.
Where can i go to get help with my addiction?
You can go to your doctor , or the fellowships that can help you. These include AA Alcoholics Anon, NA Narcotics Anon, SLA Sex and love addiction Anon, CA Cocaine Addiction Anon, The anon is obviously because of confidentiality. All of these can be googled up online.
I have a family member who is a alcoholic where can i get help?
There is a good fellowship called Ala -non and co-dependency groups that help with family’s and addiction and understand the often devastating consequences this illness has on others.
How do groups and the fellowship help me?
The meetings at the fellowships allow people to share what is going on from them in a real and honest way.
How does sharing help me?
Sharing experiences with others can be freeing and creates an intimacy that can be very healing. This is because there will be others that can identify with you and people will not judge but accept . This helps with isolation and shame which is often the painful consequence of addiction.
Someone defined the illness as insanity what does this mean?
This could relate to how the illness is compulsively driven as one does not think from a sane adult place when using. Or if one relapses , often it goes out of ones mind the previous experiences and how bad they were when submerged in the addiction cycle.
